SEO for AI-Era Search: How to Get Cited by ChatGPT and Gemini
How to get your website cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews in 2026. Crawler access, content structure, schema and off-site signals explained for businesses.
By Innovixus Team ·
In short: To get cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and other AI search tools, let their search crawlers access your site, answer real questions in the first lines of each page, back claims with specific facts and numbers, add FAQ and Organization schema, and build mentions on trusted third-party sites. Classic SEO still matters because most AI answers pull from pages that already rank. Expect results in weeks to months, not days.
A founder recently told us, "We rank on page one of Google, but when I ask ChatGPT for the best provider in our category, we don't exist." This is now a common complaint. Buyers increasingly ask an AI tool for a shortlist before they ever open a search results page, and the answer they get names a handful of sources, not ten blue links.
This guide explains how AI tools decide whom to cite, and what a small or mid-sized business can do about it without a large budget.
The short answer
| What to do | Why it helps | Effort |
|---|---|---|
| Allow AI search crawlers in robots.txt | No access means no citation | 15 minutes |
| Put a direct answer at the top of each page | AI tools quote clear, self-contained answers | Low |
| Add specific facts, numbers and tables | Concrete detail is easier to extract than opinion | Medium |
| Add FAQ and Organization schema | Helps machines understand who you are and what you answer | Low to medium |
| Build mentions on trusted third-party sites | AI tools weigh what others say about you | High, ongoing |
| Keep core pages fresh and accurate | Outdated pages lose out to current ones | Ongoing |
How AI search tools pick sources
When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity a question that needs current information, the tool usually runs a search behind the scenes, reads the top results, and writes an answer with links to the pages it used. So there are two gates to pass:
- Can the tool reach and index your page? This is a technical question.
- Does your page contain a clear, trustworthy answer that is easy to lift? This is a content question.
Google's AI Overviews work in a similar way, drawing on pages that Google already indexes. That is why pages that rank well in normal search are more likely to be cited, and why SEO fundamentals have not gone away.
Step 1: Let the right crawlers in
This is the most overlooked fix. Many sites blocked every AI bot in 2024 or 2025 as a reflex and are now invisible to AI search without knowing it.
Crawlers fall into two groups: those that collect data to train models, and those that search so the tool can cite you.
| Crawler | Owner | Purpose | If you want citations |
|---|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | OpenAI | Powers ChatGPT search results | Allow |
| ChatGPT-User | OpenAI | Fetches pages when a user asks | Allow |
| PerplexityBot | Perplexity | Perplexity search index | Allow |
| Claude-SearchBot | Anthropic | Search indexing for Claude | Allow |
| GPTBot | OpenAI | Model training | Your choice |
| Google-Extended | Controls use for Gemini training | Your choice | |
| Googlebot | Google Search and AI Overviews | Always allow |
Whether to allow training crawlers is a business decision. Blocking Google-Extended does not affect your Google Search rankings, and blocking GPTBot does not stop OAI-SearchBot. A simple policy many businesses choose is to allow search crawlers and decide on training crawlers separately.
Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and check that nothing like Disallow: / is applied to the search crawlers above. Also check that your firewall or CDN is not silently blocking them, because a clean robots.txt does not help if the request never reaches your server. Crawler names change, so confirm the current list in each provider's documentation.
Step 2: Write answers AI tools can quote
AI tools favour pages where the answer is obvious. Three habits make the difference:
- Lead with the answer. Put a two or three sentence summary at the top of every important page, before any background. Our own posts do this in the
summaryfield. - Match headings to real questions. "How much does an AI MVP cost in India?" works better than "Pricing considerations".
- Make each section self-contained. An AI tool may lift a single paragraph or table, so it should make sense without the rest of the page.
Avoid marketing language such as "world-class" or "cutting-edge". It gives a model nothing to quote.
Step 3: Use facts, numbers and tables
Compare these two lines:
- "We offer affordable AI development."
- "A focused AI chatbot on your documents typically costs ₹2.5-4 lakh and takes 6-8 weeks."
The second is specific, checkable and quotable. Add ranges, timelines, comparisons and definitions wherever you honestly can. Tables are especially useful because they are easy for both people and machines to read. Only publish numbers you can stand behind, since wrong figures that get repeated by AI tools are hard to correct later.
Step 4: Add structured data
Schema markup tells machines what a page is about in a format they do not have to guess at. For most business sites, start with:
- Organization on your home page: name, logo, website, social profiles.
- FAQPage on pages with real questions and answers.
- Article on blog posts: author, publish date and update date.
- Service or Product on the pages that describe what you sell.
Schema does not guarantee a citation, but it removes ambiguity, which helps. Make sure the markup matches the visible content on the page.
Step 5: Build credibility beyond your own site
AI tools do not only trust what you say about yourself. They look for the same story across other sources. Practical ways to build this:
- Get listed and reviewed on relevant directories and review platforms in your industry.
- Contribute expert comments or guest articles to respected publications.
- Take part in communities where your customers ask questions, such as Reddit, Quora, LinkedIn and industry forums. Answer helpfully rather than promoting.
- Publish original data, case studies or surveys that others will cite.
- Keep your name, address, services and descriptions consistent across Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and other profiles.
This is the slowest step and the one competitors find hardest to copy.
Step 6: Keep pages fresh
Add a visible updated date to key pages, and review them at least twice a year. Prices, tools and best practices in AI change quickly, and an outdated page is less likely to be chosen over a current one.
How to measure progress
There is no "AI Search Console" yet, so use a simple manual process:
- Write 15 to 20 questions your customers would ask an AI tool, including comparison and "best provider for..." style questions.
- Run them monthly in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
- Record whether you are mentioned, in what position, and whether the description is accurate.
- Check your analytics for referral traffic from AI tools, which usually appears under their domains.
- Track branded search growth, which often rises when AI tools start recommending you.
Keep the question list fixed so you can compare month to month. Answers vary between runs, so look for trends rather than single results.
Common mistakes
- Blocking all AI crawlers and then wondering why you are never cited.
- Publishing generic, AI-written articles with no original facts or experience.
- Hiding key information in images, PDFs or pages that need a login.
- Burying the answer under long introductions.
- Chasing "guaranteed AI rankings" from agencies. No one controls these answers, and anyone promising a guarantee is selling hope.
- Ignoring classic SEO basics such as page speed, mobile layout and clean site structure.

Frequently asked questions
What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?
GEO means optimising your content so AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity can find it, understand it and cite it in their answers. It builds on SEO rather than replacing it.
Does blocking GPTBot remove me from ChatGPT answers?
Not by itself. GPTBot is used for model training, while OAI-SearchBot is the crawler behind ChatGPT search results. If you want citations, keep the search crawlers allowed even if you block training crawlers.
Do I need to stop ranking on Google to appear in AI answers?
No. Strong traditional SEO still helps, because AI search tools lean on indexed, trusted pages. AI visibility is an extra layer on top of good SEO, not a separate game.
How long does it take to get cited by AI tools?
Usually weeks to a few months. Search-connected tools can pick up new pages quickly, but being recommended consistently takes repeated, credible mentions across the web.
